Now Writers Can Self-Publish to iBooks →
If you’re a hopeful author sitting on what you hope to be the next great literary classic — or, failing that, the next mopey emo vampire series that you think will sell like gangbusters amongst the indiscriminate Hot Topic tween market — great news: Apple’s just released information on self-publishing on the iBookstore. It’s a bit more complicated than just uploading your fan fiction, of...

I trust Google with a lot of things, but when in doubt I always fall back on good-old common sense. Lauren Rosenberg did not. She walked onto a highway because Google told her to and got hit by a car. More »

CIA unit's wacky idea: Depict Saddam as gay ... →
And I thought I’ve heard everything. During planning for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the CIA’s Iraq Operations Group kicked around a number of ideas for discrediting Saddam Hussein in the eyes of his people. One was to create a video purporting to show the Iraqi dictator having sex with a teenage boy, according to two former CIA officials familiar with the project. “It would look...

Texas Approves Textbook Changes - NYTimes.com →
newsweek: skybarn: It is unethical for any publishing company to follow this curriculum. Shame on them if they sell this shit. Because sometimes one must simply laugh at such things, we present our list of the 10 strangest changes in the Texas textbooks. Our favorite: Thanks to a successful lobbying effort by a Barbara Cargill, a Republican from suburban Houston, Texas textbooks will now...

Captcha! You probably had to enter it somewhere on a website already; a CAPTCHA code. A random string of awkwardly placed numbers and characters, to be recognized and entered to verify you really are human. Architect Aram Bartholl (DE) places CAPTCHA codes as tags in the public space. Their strange art of writing makes sure the codes blend in the street view unnoticed.  Are you human? (by...

“Home movies are often all the same — kids on the beach, people getting married, birthday parties — so why do we make and watch so many of them? Maybe it’s because the story they show and the story they tell are different. In this show, we bring you five stories that all start with a fairly typical home movie but go on to tell a unique story.”

Colo(u)r of Sound This project curated by Blair Neal is pretty amazing and gnarly. According to Blair: The interaction is meant to be very simple and playful, hence the major scale. It would be much more difficult for someone to walk up and have fun with a chromatic scale. Like any instrument, one would have to spend a lot of time to make a composition worth listening to and this is just a demo...
